この曲を作曲している途中に
George Gershwinは亡くなっています。
この曲のいくつかのエピソードを見つけました。
George Gershwinはよく友人に新しい曲を作っては聴いて
もらってその友人の音楽家からの意見をとても
参考にしていたそうです。
その友人の一人Oscar Levantが
この曲の９小節目から１６小節目が長く続く一つの
フレーズになっていてブレスをするところがない、、と
意見をしたそうです。
ちょうど、、歌詞でいうと
”The radio and the telephone and the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies and in time may go”
のところです。最後の8小節も同じですね。
でもそのコメントをもらった後
２日間Georgeはあれこれやったそうですが結局
元に戻したそうでそれに兄のIraは困惑したとのことです。
この曲にはバースもあるのですが
実はGeorgeは書き残していなかったそうです。
幸運にもOscar LevantがよくGeorgeのピアノ演奏を
聴いてメロディーを覚えていて
Iraが作曲家を雇いバースを完成させたそうです。
Iraが作詞した曲はもともと、、”It's Here to Stay”という
タイトルだったそうでその後すぐに歌詞の中の一節
”Our Love is Here to Stay”になりましたが
スタンダードのタイトルとしては”Love is Here to Stay”の方が
相応しいと１９６０年The George and Ira Gershwin
Songbookを出版するにあたり曲のタイトルを
” Love is Here to Stay”にしたそうです。
私たちの愛、、とは
Gershwin兄弟の愛のことですね、、
兄弟で作曲作詞をして世に作品を残した
とても素晴らしい偉業を果たした兄弟だと
思います。
弟をこの曲を作っている間に亡くした
兄Iraの気持ちがこの歌詞に表現されているのを
感じます。
その当時、、Iraはどんな気持ちで
この曲を仕上げたのでしょうか、、
歌の後半の歌詞に泣けます。
